2023 Great Grant Giveaway
Engage the power of SYNERGY at the 10th Annual Great Grant Giveaway!
Synergy exists at the heart of creative collaboration. It creates space for all. Space for different perspectives, experiences, and ideas. We know that when two or more parts come together, the combined effort is greater than the effectiveness of the individual parts alone.
At the Foundation, we partner with corporations, statewide and local organizations and associations, and small businesses to support the nonprofit recipients represented at the Great Grant Giveaway. In many instances, the Foundation team is provided unrestricted funding to achieve parody during the event; however, in some cases, a funder may decided to only support a certain field-of-interest. At the Foundation, we do our best to ensure support for all recipients.
At the 10th Anniversary of the Great Grant Giveaway, our community raised $625,000 for seven nonprofits making an impact in Albuquerque.

Selecting Organizations
In 2023, Albuquerque Community Foundation adopted several changes to its grantmaking process to offer greater transparency and allow for more authentic relationships between staff, nonprofits, Board of Trustees, Committee members, donors and grant panel participants.
In addition to the grantmaking process update, Foundation staff collaborated to create an updated set of values to reflect both what we care about today, and what we want to embody in the future. It is our intention these values guide our work moving forward and are visible by how we show up in the community. Please take a moment to read more about our new values.
With those significant changes in place, it was important for us to also reflect on the selection process of the nonprofits highlighted each year at the Foundation’s annual luncheon, the Great Grant Giveaway.
In the past, grant proposals were not directly accepted for Great Grant Giveaway consideration, and staff members made the final decision. Traditionally, staff have always determined foundation-advised grants, and the Great Grant Giveaway fund is categorized as foundation-advised. Through the course of our annual grant programs, the Foundation receives nearly 200 grant proposals. In addition to being screened for a variety of funding mechanisms including the Annual Grant Cycle, Corporate Grant Programs, Giving Circles and Donor-Advised Grants, all grant proposals are considered for participation in the Great Grant Giveaway based on the event’s annual theme and/or focus area.
This year, it was important that the Great Grant Giveaway selection process continued to evolve from its traditional format, and become more deeply aligned with our larger grantmaking and values update. We engaged with past Great Grant Giveaway recipients to recommend two to four organizations they work with closely or collaborate with often in their work as potential recipients. Engaging with past recipients in this way allowed for greater input in the selection process, as well as providing opportunities to uplift organizations from past events. After recommendations were given, staff voted on final recipients, selecting one for each of our seven fields-of-interest.
The Foundation is committed to a continuous evaluation of our grant process and continuing to examine ways to adopt equity principles in our grantmaking.

Grant proposals are not accepted for Great Grant Giveaway recipients. Recipients are selected by Foundation staff. Through the course of our annual work, we receive nearly 100 Letters of Intent and Grant Proposals. In addition to being screened for potential Competitive and Donor-Advised Grants, all are reviewed through the lens of potential Great Grant Giveaway participants. Additionally, all Foundation staff are extremely active in the community participating almost daily in convening’s, events and other activities sponsored by local nonprofits. We are continually monitoring this work for consideration in our annual event.
Eventually, all organizations are considered as we piece together the puzzle that becomes the Great Grant Giveaway, most importantly reaching all of the fields-of-interest, population segments and priorities of the Foundation and its donors.
